L’hiver – Théophile Gautier

In this post, L’hiver – Théophile Gautier, the author captures the stark and melancholic essence of the winter season. Through vivid imagery, he describes the cold landscape, frozen fields, and birds seeking shelter, emphasizing the stillness and hardship brought by winter. The poem contrasts the warmth of other seasons with the pale, distant sun and the long, dark nights. Gautier’s refined and sensory-rich language paints a poetic yet somber picture of nature under winter’s grasp, reflecting both its quiet beauty and its unforgiving cold.

French poetry:

French English
L’hiver, le voilà, le voilà !
Dans la vallée, au fond des bois,
Il descend la pente rapide,
Poussant devant lui la bise aride,
Et les longs jours, et les longs mois.
Winter, here it comes, here it comes!
In the valley, deep in the woods,
He descends the steep slope,
Pushing before it the arid breeze,
And the long days, and the long months.
Les prés ne sont plus qu’une glace,
La feuille au vent s’est envolée ;
Le passereau, qui meurt de froid,
Sous le chaume s’abrite et passe
Sa petite tête effarée.
The meadows have turned to ice,
The leaf in the wind is gone;
The sparrow, dying of cold,
Beneath the thatch shelters
His frightened little head.
Les jours sont courts, la nuit est noire,
L’eau gémit dans son lit de bois,
Le ciel s’est dépeuplé d’étoiles,
Le pauvre soleil, triste et froid,
Ne jette plus que des éclats pâles.
The days are short, the night is dark,
The water moans in its wooden bed,
The sky is devoid of stars,
The poor sun, sad and cold,
Throws out nothing but pale flashes.
