Le subjonctif présent

Le subjonctif présent in French is used to express actions or ideas that are uncertain, subjective, or dependent on certain conditions. It often follows verbs or expressions that involve emotions, doubts, wishes, or possibilities. Here’s a breakdown of when to use the subjonctif:

1. After Expressions of Emotion or Feeling:

  • Je suis content que tu sois ici. (I’m happy that you’re here.)
  • Elle a peur que tu partes. (She’s afraid that you’ll leave.)

2. After Verbs of Doubt or Uncertainty:

  • Je doute que ce soit vrai. (I doubt that it’s true.)
  • Il n’est pas certain que tu viennes. (It’s not certain that you’re coming.)
  • Note: If the verb expresses certainty, the indicative is used instead.
    • Je suis sûr que tu as raison. (I’m sure that you’re right.)

3. After Verbs of Desire or Will:

  • Je veux que tu fasses ça. (I want you to do that.)
  • Il souhaite que nous partions tôt. (He wishes that we leave early.)

4. After Certain Conjunctions:

  • Pour que tu comprennes, je vais répéter. (So that you understand, I’ll repeat.)
  • Bien que tu sois fatigué, tu dois travailler. (Although you’re tired, you must work.)
  • Common conjunctions include:
    • pour que (so that)
    • afin que (in order that)
    • bien que (although)
    • avant que (before)
    • jusqu’à ce que (until)
    • à condition que (provided that)

5. After Impersonal Expressions:

  • Il est important que tu lises ce livre. (It’s important that you read this book.)
  • Il faut que tu viennes. (It’s necessary that you come.)
  • Common impersonal expressions:
    • Il est nécessaire que… (It’s necessary that…)
    • Il est possible que… (It’s possible that…)
    • Il est dommage que… (It’s a shame that…)

6. In Relative Clauses with Superlatives or Indefinite Antecedents:

  • Je cherche quelqu’un qui sache parler français. (I’m looking for someone who can speak French.)
