Qu’est-ce que c’est le passé composé?

Le passé composé (the preterit or compound past) allows us to describe actions in the past. In order to learn about the preterit or le passé composé we need to remember that it is formed using 2 verbs:

1) An auxiliary: L’auxiliaire Avoir or Être* (conjugated based on the subject of the sentence) and

2) A past participle: Le participe passé is made from a form of the infinitive of the verb.

Although the majority of verbs use avoir when the passé composé is formed, être is used as well:

Endings of the past participle:

The “Participe passé” comes after the conjugated form of avoir or être in the sentence. It is made using the infinite as the root, with a slight change:

-er	é (drop the -er ending and add é)	regardé

-re	u (drop the -re ending and add u)	vendu
